The process of puttying the walls is mandatory if you want to get perfectly smooth and beautiful walls, regardless of whether you paint them or apply liquid wallpaper. The essence of the work is simple and clear, so it will not be difficult to do it yourself.

The advantages of putty are that all materials necessary for work are available in any store and are sold at an affordable price. They differ in economy and variety of compositions.

Types of putty

At the moment, putties of several types are presented on the market:

  1. Oil-glue. This is the cheapest option. Despite this, its efficiency is very high - the composition allows to increase the waterproofing of the premises and prevents the negative impact of moisture on the walls. Therefore, such plaster is an ideal solution for kitchens, bathrooms, basements, cells, etc. Among other things, this is the most optimal option if you have wooden walls plastered to the point of raggedness, because the plaster prevents rotting of the substrate and rusting of nails.
  2. Gypsum cement. Its price is higher than that of the previous putty, but it is more versatile and can be used for all types of finishing works. There are several possible options here - for living rooms, you need to choose materials with the LR index, as well as KR, and for rooms with high humidity - with the VH index. This is a suitable option when puttingtying walls under liquid wallpaper.
  3. Water dispersion. This is one of the varieties of gypsum-cement putty. Its main feature is a viscous structure (explained by the industrial method of manufacturing the composition), high smoothness and strength. Another advantage is the ease of use of the material. The composition is sold in plastic buckets and is ready for use immediately after purchase, that is, it eliminates the need to spend time preparing the mixture. So it is suitable even for a beginner in the construction industry, because it is very easy to apply it to the wall.
  4. Acrylic. This putty combines the advantages of all the options listed above. It is characterized by very high smoothness, which will make the process of applying liquid wallpaper extremely difficult.

So, where to start puttingty walls with your own hands?

First of all, you need to clean the walls. All remnants of old plaster, paint and wallpaper must be removed. Make sure to dry the room well (at least 24 hours) and check the walls again for bumps and dents. Use a ruler and a flashlight - this will allow you to quickly notice any flaws. If significant defects are detected, remove the bulges with a planer or a sharp plaster spatula, circle the depressions in the wall with a pencil.

Primer

The next step is a primer, we recommend using primer Ceresit CT 16, Dufa Q815. It will ensure a good bond between the putty and the wall surface. When the first layer dries, you can apply the base putty. Complete instructions for applying liquid wallpaper !

We will need a small spatula. The material is applied from the bottom up with continuous movements. We eliminate excess material or smears from left to right. Make sure the layer is not too thick.

To apply a new layer, it is better to use a large spatula. The material is applied with an overlap of 5 cm on the previous layer. Don't forget to remove the bumps. When the entire surface of the wall will be processed, it is necessary to start processing the corners. To do this, use a small spatula to apply putty on both sides of the corner from the bottom to the top, and then spread and level the layer with the corner spatula. Leave the walls to dry for at least 12 hours.

Grinding and finishing putty

The next stage of work involves sanding the walls with a grater (we perform the work with active circular movements), which is not necessary for liquid wallpaper, because the rough surface facilitates application. Then we apply a layer of primer and wait for it to dry completely.

The final stage is the application of the finishing layer of putty. The principle is the same as at the initial stage, but the layer is made thinner than the base layer. Its purpose is to hide irregularities and defects, if they remain. When the walls are dry, we sand them again and fix the result using a deep penetration primer.

It turns out that plastering the walls with your own hands is not such a difficult process. Follow the instructions and you will succeed! Good luck!
